Pondicherry Cooperative Housing Federation
has set up a new venture in 1990
“ Pondicherry Cooperative Building Centre”
with the objectives to guide, assist and
provide the cost effective housing technology,
develop awareness in use of modern building
materials and promoting a super Market for
sale of building materials to member organizations.

Membership: |

The membership of the center as on 31st March,
2007 was 2102 comprising of 28 institutions,
1973 members, State Govt. and 100
class D members. The share capital of the
centre has increased from Rs. 47.36 lakh in
2000-1 to Rs. 114.28 lakh in 2006-7.
Objectives:
The
main objective of the centre was
a) to set up manufacturing units of building
materials/purchase in bulk quantity of materials
for construction of buildings and sell the same to
members as well as to public at fair
and reasonable price.
b) to promote the use of certified low cost materials
to reduce the construction cost.
Management :
The society is functioning fully on Democratic and Cooperative principles. Throughout its tenure, it had the elected management and is following democratic norms.
Setting Up of Super Market:
In order to facilitate and achieve the first objective, the centre has set up a super market for building materials in the premises of Pondicherry Central Coop. Marketing Society Complex at Kamraj Salai, Ilango Nagar Pondicherry. The aim of this market was to provide all building materials at one roof . This society is carrying its business and services with utmost satisfactorily to members, public and Govt. Depts.

Value added Services Performed:
During this short span of time, the center beside their normal services of building materials has also diversified many value added services such as opening of new branches, guidance center for imparting education to skilled and non-skilled labourers, setting up of two lorry weighbridges of 80 Mt Capacity at Sedarpet and Mettupalayam PIPDIC Industrial Estate. The Centre has been granted the permission on lease to undertake sand mining and obtained the sales exemption from their sale. This has helped a lot to provide cheaper materials to members and public at large.

Business Performance:
The Centre has increased their sales turn over from Rs. 450.4 lakh in 1999-00 to 1590.13 lakhs in 2006-7 multiplied to 3.5 fold increase. The net profit of the centre has increased from 2.55 lakh in 2000-01 to Rs. 19.51 lakh. At present there are 15 sales branches in urban and Rural areas run by the centre. The Super Market provides materials like VIZAG SAIL steels, Quality cements, Paints, Sanitary, Wares, PVC pipes, AC sheets, Ceramic Tiles, Weathering Tiles Electric Goods, Stoneware Pipes, Hardware items, Marble & Cuddappah stone. In addition, the super market also lending the centering sheets, column boxes, spans, props, Mixer Machine and Vibrators to the public at a nominal and fair price.

Winning of Award:
The services of the center has been acknowledged by awarding best run society in 2004-5 by the state and in 2006 by National Housing Congress convened by National Cooperative Housing Federation of India. The society has been awarded the meritorious award by the International Cooperative Housing Foundation for Asia and Pacific as Best Run Building Centre for Asian and Pacific.
Future Strategy :
(a) The centre has planned to open new branches in unrepresented areas having potentials.
(b) It has also planned to set up a fly Ash brick making unit.
